When the bugs that cause an infection get going…

The other day my girlfriend treated a patient with Ludwig’s angina in the emergency room.  This condition is an extremely scary result of a person continuing to ignore a tooth infection and seeing multiple doctors, each prescribing antibiotics.

Ludwig’s angina progresses as a rapidly moving infection that causes serious swelling and carries a high risk of loosing the ability to breathe.  Patient’s with on and off swelling associated with a tooth abscess need to seek treatment to avoid having the infection progress out of control.  When the bugs that cause infection get going it can be difficult to stop them, the power of an antibiotic is limited.

When any family member has a dental infection please support them in seeking definitive care.  Coming to the dentist can be intimidating, but following through prevents dangerous visits to the emergency room.
